If you or a loved one is struggling with disordered eating,
You are Not Alone.
Eating disorders are one of the most misunderstood mental illnesses that causes immense amount of shame and secrecy. Eating disorders can often be hidden for years before a person is willing to seek treatment. The shame and myths surrounding eating disorders can be deadly, as eating disorders have the highest mortality rate of any mental illness.
Types of Eating DIsorders
Many people are aware of the main eating disorders such as anorexia, bulimia and binge eating disorder.
Eating disorder symptoms occur on a continuum; however. Many people struggle with an unhealthy relationship to food and exercise, but do not see it as a problem because it is not a "full blown eating disorder" or their weight is in the normal range and/or they are overweight. If you find yourself preoccupied with food, exercise, or your body and impacts your social life or causes anxiety or depression, please reach out to see if therapy can be helpful for you.
- Anorexia Nervosa- Restriction of food that leads to significant weight loss
- Bulimia Nervosa- Binge eating with behaviors to "make up" for calories consumed during the binge such as self induced vomiting, laxative abuse, over exercising or food restriction
- Binge Eating Disorder- Binge eating without any behaviors to "make up" for calories consumed during the binge
